A huge difference between ‘Design’ and an ‘Advertisement’ is that Designs are pictures which INTEND to communicate a company idea and Ads are what are used to sell a company’s product or services.
Advertising isn’t what it used to be either. There are dozens of new ways to advertise that costs a fraction of the price of traditional advertising. Today it’s a matter of putting time instead of money into a campaign. The best part: it can hit twice the audience reach.
Don’t try to manage it yourself. Well, you could. Go right ahead, list your offerings; prices, products and services, discounts, deals, etc… and you are very likely to attempt boring your customers into buying your stuff. 😁 At the firm, we call these types of advertisements and listings the “sad and sorry” approach. These types of advertisements are a real yawn.
A more successful approach is to use humor. The writing and graphics in Trader Joe’s “Fearless Flyer” is an amazing feat of reader engagement meets solid information leaving the sad and sorry approach DEAD; a defeated corps on the battlefield for your attention and audience engagement.
Doing your own ads, graphics and copywriting is like doing your own brain surgery. You can, but that doesn’t mean you should.
Here’s our 10 Bitchin’ Copy Tips to assist you on your exploration because advertising seems so easy for the novice. 🤪

We worked with Scot Rossillo [ inventor of the Rainbow Bagel ] early on, in Williamsburg, and actually helped SAVE his first Bagel store there. He thought it was a clever little joke to mock the area with the Starbucks-like signage NOT fully realizing that he was deeply offending people in 2001. Fortunately, we were able to fix the problem with a single advertisement. It turned him and his bagel store from the most hated to a most loved new business in a week.
Scot Rossillo invented the phenomenal sensation: The Rainbow Bagel fad has forever changed the landscape of not only Williamsburg | Brooklyn but bagels across the country (maybe even the world). Innovations such as this are what we live and die for at BinkNyc.
